The App Store: Light Years Ahead?

WWDC2009 The App Store: Light Years Ahead?Photos of the WWDC banners hanging at the Moscone Center in San Francisco have appeared via Flickr. The tagline for this year’s event seems to be “One year later. Light-years ahead.”

This is obviously driven by the App Store, which premiered last year and one year later has 20,000+ applications in it. It’s also probably a dig at the Palm Web OS and their App Catalog, which will basically start at zero (not really, as there will be some apps already) on day one of the Palm Web OS era (June 6th).

Yes, in terms of number of downloads and apps, the App Store is light years ahead of the App Catalog. What Palm needs to do is convince developers to support Web OS in the same way that they have done for the iPhone.

It’s not just small developers either. Every time I turn around some bank or realtor or something like the Kindle app for the iPhone will appear. Palm needs that sort of support to even come close to competing with the iPhone.
